Many congrats to the team at Dabbawal, which launched last night to rave reviews - soon to be replicated (from what I'm told) in the local media! Located on High Bridge Street, Dabbawal brings authentic Indian 'street food' to the heart of Newcastle and is named not after the type of food you can eat on the run but after the dabbawallas (lunchbox delivery men) who bring the comfort of home-cooked food to the offices and pillars of industry all over their cities.
Dabbawal aims to play a similar role and make Indian food a real consideration when people are deciding what to have for lunch while in the centre of town.
With an open show kitchen that features one of the only Robata grills outside of London and lets diners see fresh breads and healthy kebabs being made before their eyes, the hustle and bustle of the streets of India is recreated. The Indian tapas menu is ideal for any time of day - as well as pre and post-theatre stops - while the classic curries will tempt anyone with a larger appetite.
So whether it's lunch or dinner you're after, why not take a look. Top tip - check out the cocktail menu while you're on!
